India’s Satyam chief resigns-Ramalinga Raju

8-satyamSatyam Computer plunged into a deep crisis, as B Ramalinga Raju resigned as its chairman after admitting to a Rs.65.92-billion (Rs.6,592-crore) fraud and subjected himself to the “laws of land.” He said his last-ditch efforts to fill the “fictitious assets with real ones” through Maytas acquisition failed. The announcement led to a free fall of the blue chip’s shares on the Indian bourses, as institutional and retail investors alike dumped the scrip from the first hour of trading.

“It is with deep regret and tremendous burden that I am carrying on my conscience, that I would like to bring the following facts to your notice,” Raju said in a regulatory statement, and listed out the ‘facts’ that led to his decision to quit the company he founded.

Shares of the company plunged by over 40 per cent soon after the resignations. Satyam, considered a ripe proposition for acquisition, was pushed into crisis after Raju was forced to abandon the acquisition of Maytas Infrastructure and Maytas Properties promoted by his son. Satyam’s stock has collapsed by more than 60 per cent, and reports claim that Merrill Lynch has terminated its contract with the company.

If the strike drags on for that long, vegetables may be out of reach for the common man.

8-stikeThe nation-wide transporters strike entered the fourth day on Thursday with both truckers and government refusing to stand down from their stated positions.

“It is unfortunate that so far there is no response from the government. We simply cannot run our business in losses, so we are continuing the strike and we will continue till our demands are met,” All India Motor Transport Congress President Charan Singh Lohara told reporters.

The ongoing nationwide strike of transporters has jacked up prices of essential commodities in Chandigarh. Prices of pulses, vegetables and fruits have spiraled and with the truckers strike showing no signs of ending soon, it is the common man who will suffer.

Chandigarh’s largest vegetable market has only small vendors coming in these days and they say that the truckers strike has made prices shoot up, which their customers are not willing to pay. They also blame the big players of hoarding vegetables.

Prices of food items, including coarse cereals, vegetables and fruits, are reported to have remained steady in the wholesale market across the country. However, key spot markets for commodities like sugar, potato and maize remained closed as the strike crippled supplies of these goods leading to a rise in prices.

Truckers went on an indefinite strike since Sunday midnight to press for reduction in diesel prices, exemption in service and toll taxes and a single permit for nation-wide transportation among others, affecting transportation in various parts of the country.

India sent a proposal to extend the two-Test series

BCCI has formally sent a proposal to the New Zealand Board to extend the two-Test series by a match when India tour the island nation in March-April this year.

The tour, starting March 6, originally featured two Tests, five one-dayers and a Twenty20 match.

“The proposal to play an additional Test match has been sent to New Zealand Cricket, which will be responding to it soon. The BCCI incurred a Rs 120 crore loss last year after India’s tour of Pakistan was cancelled and the visiting England team pulled out of the last two one-dayers of a seven-match series in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks.

The Indian Board is also planning a one-day series against Sri Lanka next month to make up for the cancellation of the tour of Pakistan.

CRICKET-AUSTRALIA/India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has maintained his top position in the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) one-day rankings with Michael Hussey of Australia and South Africa’s Graeme Smith close on his heels. No Indian bowler figures among top 10, even though Zaheer Khan(660) is at the 11th position, two points behind England’s Andrew Flintoff (662) who is at 10th.

In the bowlers’ chart, Indian pace spearhead Zaheer rose a step to 11th while offie Harbhajan Singh (20th) climbed two rungs to break into the top 20. Outside India, Sri Lanka’s up-and-coming pacer Nuwan Kulasekara gained 11 places to 14th place after a successful series against Zimbabwe.
